On Wednesday March 21st 2007, I will be presenting an informal session on iSCSI and Global Filesystem (GFS). We will go over a few slides to cover the topics and then we'll proceed with a live demonstration using Fedora Core 6 (FC6).

Apparently, I'll be talking about DM/MPIO too.

Attendance is open to the public free of charge. Time and location can be found at the Boston Linux & UNIX (BLU) homepage.

All of us here at Linuxsoup.com (all of one), have been reviewing the possibility of converting to Drupal. At this time, our other site Bisque is running on drupal...

However, we have resolved to continue toying with & evolving Ladle. Since it's premise still stands true (to provide us with a educational test ground) it only makes sense. Thus, we'll be adding RSS capabilities soon & work deligently on improving adminstration interfaces.

I am currently investigating switching the backend of linuxsoup over to drupal. I have not made any developments to "ladle" in quite a while, and I can easily port the best features/plugins over. We will probably see those changes in the next 48 hours.

Once that is accomplished, I can focus on useful informative (Linux) & entertaining (snow) content.

Update (1/2/2007) : Cancel that! I'm resuming work on ladle.

My life / career is in rapid re-development. As a part of this process, linuxsoup is also undergoing some changes. Unfortunately, the DNS service was lost for about a week, but it appears I'm back in business... Stay tuned...

Happy to announce I have our Toshiba A75 S1253 mostly working on Fedora Core4 without any special hacks. General summary: Intel 3.2GHz Mobility HT, 256Mb (added another 512Mb), 60GB disk, CDRW/DVD-R, 802.11a/b/g wireless. Only thing missing is successfully rebooting with an init 6 (that still seems to get wedged at reset). I have read in several places the wierdness regarding Toshiba APCI funk.
INSTALLATION
use "linux vga=771". This will set the video to a suitable working mode during the install.
WIRELESS
You'll need to get the regular wired LAN working for this, but that is autodetected and works fine. Once it's up, add the madwifi rpms from livna repos. Make sure the manual external switch on the side is set to enable wifi. Once on, I just used the good old Fedora configuration tools. My current kernel is 2.6.14-1.1653_FC4smp
AUDIO
Using the GUI alsa mixer, I enabled "external amplifier" in the switches tab. If you don't see it, you need to flip it on in the preferences too. Also make sure the manual volume control on the outside of your system is turned up.
CPU SPEED
Put the following in /etc/cpuspeed.conf. This sets the right cpu driver, and sets minimum speed to 1.2GHz.
DRIVER="p4_clockmod"
OPTS="$OPTS -m 1024000 -n"
Don't forget to add the "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" to your tool bar :-).

A little FYI... I successfully renewed my RHCE :-)

Times sure have changed! When I got my first RHCE (2000) the course covered RH6.2 plus kernel/software customization & compiling skills. Today, it's about RHEL4, RAID, LVM, SELinux, IPTables, etc... Kernel tweaking is out!

I'm not suggesting good or bad... just different. Personally, I think the RHCE is still one of the most respresentative ceritificates of an administrator's skill sets. Product wise, I am looking forward to RHEL5 with (hopefully) some Xen and continued improvements in kernel core dumping abilities.

It took long enough, butI finally got around to posting pictures of our trip to Lake Tahoe. Good thing the movie came out first!

I am also considering rendering the movie from scratch without the music in order to make availble something that's copyright free. We'll see in time if that ever happens.

In recent months, I've rekindled interest in playing piano. For family and relatives, I've posted some recodings in the "Music" folder. Don't expect much, it's just for fun...

It's been a long time since any work has been done. But, I'm back at again. This release fixes a few bugs in Calendar related tools, and also change the content managers view to something a bit more detailed.

A new plugin to create reoccuring events was added (CalEvtGen.php). Kind of handy for managing something like a on-call rotation, or a jogging rotation.

Also fixed a number little formatting bugs in the UserAdmin/Info tools.

Now available in the download area, it's 3.20. See the changelog for complete details. The skins are all working again so the 'pre' designator has been dropped.

Summary: bug fixs in CalendarForge, skinmgr.lib, CalEvtTrader and a minor tweak in calendar-mysql.lib to enhance output formatting.

Mostly skin updates to fit the new blended XML / CSS skins. Most are close to fixed, but some are still completely broken. Should have everything back to par by the end of this week.

Due to unresolved compatability problems between IE and Netscape, ladle has undergone yet another overhaul. Now there exists a XML (like) skin configuration file which you can use to wrap ladle's output in your own html.

Example: You want your output to expand and collapse like a table with many rows, but use of CSS floats and absolute positioning isn't working as advertised (IE!). Well, now you can opt to stuff some <table>'s in to the output stream by doctoring up a skin.xml file.

More details to come...

A interim version of ladle has been posted. Unfortunately the only functional skin is linuxsoup. However, the CSS formatting output is 99% done IHMO, and now the conversion of the other default skins begins. Everything should be back to snuff by next week.

This truely was a major overhaul of the code base and as it turns out, many HTML formatting errors and some seemingly harmless coding errors were also caught and corrected.

GO REDSOX!!!!

This should come as a shock to no one, but ladle is having a devil of a time generating output that formats the same on both Netscape and Internet Explorer. Little did I know that there exists an entire underground cult devoted CSS formatting tricks. However, said cult is not the most articulate when it comes to explaining why things (don't) work the way they do. Now if I could just figure out this collapsing margins thing ....

But, the good news is we're on the upper end of the learning curve and IE compatability is catching up rapidly.

Ladle is once again undergoing a major overhaul. The new pre3.01 release is not ready for public consumption but does implement a majority of the coding changes. The only skin 90% converted is golf, which is why the default skin for the main page has been changed (for now).

If you view the source for this page, it's much cleaner without use of tables for page layout.

Slowly, we are back to work on the ladle webportal. Upcoming features will include a much improved User/Group administrator. This release cleans up some style sheet left overs.

TOPIC CHANGE: Sorry, but I have to swap topics. This time it'll be Cinelerra. Next time is PVR. :-(

I am endeavoring to build a Linux based Personal Video Recorder (aka: a homebrew TIVO). So it's only natural that I report back to the area LUG how things worked out. So, this coming March 2004 at Boston Linux & UNIX (BLU) I'll present my results. The outline will look something like this:

  • Mission statement
  • Definition of terms
  • Compare & Contrast the active projects
  • Hardware selection (feature vs. cost)
  • Installation & setup
  • Product demonstration
  • Kickstart your own PVR - bring your hardware!!
